Over six years, the suspect shot 10 people, killing one, and opened fire at 27 other scenes. But over the years, the outcast left behind 205 pieces of evidence, which the police collected one by one.

The police named it: "MUF 40-13." It was on a long list of "multi-purpose firearms" that police tracked from early 2013 to late 2015. They knew it was a .40 caliber weapon and that it was the 13th type on their list. .

The Glock was one of 148 missing handguns used in multiple shootings that police traced between 2013 and 2015 using ballistics technology to match casings or bullets left at crime scenes.

A gun-sharing network emerged in which many firearms were stashed away for easy access by gang members, police said.
Police call them community weapons. In winter, when the snow makes it difficult to hide them outside, street gangs often hide them under porches and in empty houses. When the weather is nicer, they are hidden in the mowed areas between the streets, sometimes even in garbage cans.
"It's a huge problem because we can't stop the flow of firearms," said Clifford Ryans, who founded OGs Against Violence in July in response to the spate of shootings.
Between July and December, Ryans spoke to 21 people who told him they planned to shoot someone. The Ryans believe at least five planned to use the weapons on the community. He had no specific knowledge of this - just an assumption based on people's easy access to these weapons, he said.

Gangs use community weapons so everyone in the gang has easy access, Trudell said. They hide the gun so they are less likely to be caught with it and face gun possession charges, he said.
Gangs likely use the same weapon repeatedly because they know it works and have ammunition at the ready, Trudell said.
Guns have been in the community for at least 10 years, Trudell said. New ballistic technology has revealed the extent of their use, he said.
"Obviously, we're all concerned that there's a term 'community gun,'" said Larry Williams, program director of Save Our Youth, an organization that fights gang violence.

The impact of police gun control in the community is reflected in the numbers. The number of firearm arrests jumped from 133 in 2014 to 220 last year. The number of illegal firearms seized by police rose from 235 two years ago to 298 last year.
Police are sending their officers to areas where guns are most commonly used in the community to find them, Trudell said.
One of the guns still missing was used in three separate murders, he said. He said he could not give more details about the weapon because its release could jeopardize the police investigation.
After the .40 caliber Glock was rebuilt last year, the new number one became a gun that was used 20 times. The other missing weapon was used 14 times.

Trudell did not release details about the shooting in which the Glock was used. He did not want to jeopardize the ongoing criminal proceedings related to the murder.
The gun was originally legally sold in Rutland, Vermont, in 1999, according to a trace from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. It was never reported stolen, Trudell said. He declined to divulge other information about the gun's history.
It first appeared in 2009 crimes on the city's West Side, used by gang members, Trudell said.
Gun-related gang shootings stayed on the west side for a while before moving to the south side, he said. He knows which gang used the gun, but doesn't want to reveal it.

"These types of weapons are definitely kept in a group for ease of use," he said. "That's their whole purpose. That's why we see 37 uses on this and 20 uses on that—because they're used multiple times."
"We're trying to get the community to see what we're doing and then accept that to tell us that this is the house behind which the gun is stored," Trudell said. Community help helped police catch their Public Enemy #1 gun - a Glock. Last year, police responded to an illegally parked car that led to a suspect behind a home, Trudell said.
When the person came out from behind the house, witnesses told police they saw him put a gun in it, he said.
